Urban Fox - Memoirs of an Edinburgh Poacher
|INSIDE:||17 black & white wood engravings|
Urban Fox is a frank and humorous memoir that shares with us a lifetime of adventures and tells of one man's love of the countryside. Beautifully illustrated with evocative wood engravings, Urban Fox will delight the reader with its tales of a hidden world. It celebrates a way of life that few will believe possible, that of the urban poacher.
The hunting, be it with dogs, ferrets, boomerangs or longbows, takes place within the city limits of Edinburgh. The enemy of the city poacher is not the gamekeeper but the occasional red-faced pre-breakfast jogger gasping his way through woods, scattering the wildlife.
Spanning almost forty years of hunting, Urban Fox begins with an enthusiastic young boy with a passion for egg collecting and bird watching and ends with a 'respectable' old man looking back on his hunter's life. These are memoirs tinged with a little guilt but few regrets.
Illustrations by Kathleen Lindsley
Robert Macfarlane - author 'The Old Ways'. "I have loved delving into your book and your world. Your book is funny, wonderful, and in my experience unique in the story it tells. I've been reading sections to my children and re telling choice anecdotes to my friends. Kathleen's wood engravings are a brilliant accompaniment and counterpoint. I especially liked the winter fox on page 143."
"This book will be of great interest to anyone who has a love of the country and has spent time camping, fishing and hillwalking.
The good combination of text and illustrations will appeal to those who are familiar with authors such as 'B.B.' (D J Watkins-Pitchford)and Ian Niall."
