About Us
The Crowood Press was founded in 1982 by John Dennis, who
remains the company's owner and Chairman. John not only
commissioned the first title, Long Distance Casting,
but also edited and designed it, doing the paste-up on
the kitchen table. When it was published he, along with
his wife Tina, spent hours packing and despatching copies
to customers.
The success
of Long Distance Casting, which was on the
list for many years but is now sadly out of
print, set in train a remarkable period of
expansion, initially in the areas of sport,
fishing, equestrianism and country sports, but
soon developing into gardening, farming, dogs,
crafts, motoring, military history and aviation.
Our backlist now includes around 900 titles, with
approximately 70 new books published each year.
Crowood's acknowledged classics include The
Skills Of Cricket by Keith Andrew, The
Handbook Of Flytying by Peter Gathercole, Food
For Sport by Jane Griffin, Hooked On Bass by Alan Vaughan and Mike Ladle, All 14 Eight-Thousanders
by Reinhold Messner, and Laurie Williamson's DIY books, Home Extensions and Loft Conversions .
Highlights of our list today include the
acclaimed Crowood AutoClassics and Crowood
Aviation Series, the highly respected Windrow
& Greene military list, the instructional
Skills of the Game series, our lavishly
illustrated pottery and ceramics titles and our authoritative theatre books. Since 2002 we have published titles under the Farming Press imprint, and since 2003 we have published the Airlife Publishing list.
Based
in Ramsbury, Wiltshire, we remain fully
independent and committed to our aims of
providing detailed, quality information for those
with special interests.
